Q & A
Nikša on art and b.arty
I do art as for me it’s not only a profession, but a mean to translate my insecurities, questions and internal turmoils into visible, palpable shapes. Art is my introspection language, a space where vulnerability becomes strength and fragments of my personal experience get universal meaning. My practice always starts with the material and process. I’m attracted to contrasts: fragile and heavy, smooth and rough, natural and industrial. I experiment with stone, wood, concrete, metal, plaster, as every material carries its own poetic and resistance, and each process discovers a new dimension of my inner world. In that clash of material and meaning the works are born that are not only forms but symbols.
Art brings together the introspective and the collective. When I speak of my weaknesses I speak of universal experiences: disorientation in the space of life, facing fears and challenges, reexamining one’s own role.
At the end, the art for me is the only space where imperfection is not a flaw, but a source of authenticity. It is a process without a final answer, a perpetual opening of new questions. It enables me to be a builder and explorer and to reshape my experience into a matter that can touch another person.
The biggest challenge I face as an artist is how to find balance between how well I want to say something. I often work with subjects that are personal where the challenge is to make them accessible and relevant for the audience and for me as a future creator, without losing authenticity.
Besides art, I’m interested in the processes of transformation of the material, psychology and the ways in which the inner states can materialise into external shapes. I’m also inspired by architecture and horticulture in touch with materials.
I’m living and working in Belgrade, as an independent artists and a member of artistic community, combining experiences of teamwork and individual projects.
I’d like this form of communication with the audience to result in my works not being just objects to look at but experiences that draw the audience into introspection. I wish people to recognise parts of their own insecurities, questions and quests in my work, opening space for dialogue and understanding.
